Ginger Snaps - The blog of Jayne Hawkins

Go Sober!

Right, all this toxic medicine has clearly affected me more than I ever thought possible and as a result I appear to have gone off the old vino! So I have decided to make something good come out of this disastrous occurrence and go on the wagon for October to raise some money for Macmillan Cancer.

Go Sober for October!

I would really appreciate it if you would kindly donate the price of a bottle of wine or the cost of a drink or two to this fantastic cause!

Wig shopping

24 Sep 2013

The wig shopping trip wasn’t as bad as I thought.  I had been sent to a back street wig shop in the centre of Newcastle and I took my parents and Simon along for support.  Simon was in a meeting before hand and we were meeting him there.  He was delayed and as we stood outside the shop waiting for him I nearly backed out.  The window display didn’t really fill me with confidence and I almost talked myself into going home.

In the end I gave myself one of my shakes, gave myself a talking to and walked in.  It wasn’t actually as bad as I thought and the wigs were quite impressive.  I had decided I wanted exactly what I had before, never been one to experiment with my hair so I thought that was best.  I also thought that it would help with retaining normality and wouldn’t make me stand out too much.

I tried on a number of wigs, I looked dreadful with long hair, didn’t feel “safe” in a short wig and although I didn’t look bad with black hair it was probably too much of a change so in the end  I settled for pretty much the same cut as I had already, albeit it was a whole load tidier that my usual messy mop.  The lady in the shop said she would order me a number of “shades of ginger” for me to try on and I went home feeling a bit happier.

When we went back a week later I was impressed to find they had matched my hair colour almost perfectly with just perhaps a few more blond highlights in it.  I also tried a dark red wig on which looked OK but again was too much of a change and I made a dreadful blond if I’m honest!  So we left half an hour later with “Codi” the wig which pretty much matched me perfectly.  Result!

That evening at my parent’s house we had a bit of fun as the kids, Simon, my brother Andrew and Mam tried it on……Dad refused for some reason!!  I was quite cheesed off when my brother Andrew looked fabulous in it, the way it fell was just perfect……git!  Simon made a dreadful ginger although I don’t think the dark beard helped, Kyle looked like me in it, Leo made a lovely little girl and my Mam looked extremely funny with long straight hair having has short wavy hair for as long as I can remember.
